Here is the omiyage (souvenir) size of the Green Tea Kit Kat sold in Kyoto Japan. God, this stuff is delicious…Green tea white chocolate with a 3 layer wafer crunch. The chocolate just melts where you hold one of the four bars between your fingers. You can’t have just one break of the Kit Kat. The Souvenir version and the retail version taste are exactly the same and taste exactly the same.
Now, with touch of Matcha Green Tea in this white chocolate Kit Kat confection Green Tea lovers as well as Kit Kat lovers have more reason to celebrate! It’s the best of both worlds. Japanese Snack and Sweets fusion! The green tea flavor is not overbearing and you don’t taste the bitterness that is found when drinking green tea or enjoying matcha green tea ice cream (another favorite of mine which has a stronger, more bitter aftertaste than the Green Tea Kit Kat which I could taste the green tea initially but no green tea bitter after taste).
This souvenir pack sold in and around Kyoto hold 4 packs of retail size Kit Kats (which each contains 4 bars). Sold for about 600 yen it’s a great souvenir to send or bring home to your family overseas as this version is not sold anywhere outside of Japan.
When I first saw it in Kyoto I was thinking “WOW! It’s Matcha Green Tea Kit Kat!” and I couldn’t get it out of my mind having a love of the original Kit Kat myself. I’m going around visiting the beautiful temples in Kyoto and at the same time thinking “Damn, I gotta get that Matcha Green Tea Kit Kat!!!!”
You’d probably have the same reaction if you saw it for the first time not having read this information on Green Tea Kit Kat before. Not all the souvenir shops carry it so I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you pick it up when you first see it rather than waiting for a better price (not likely cause other shops price accordingly as well). Even if you do find a shop with a lower price it may only be 30 yen cheaper so why bother taking the risk of not being able to pick it up anyway?
Kit Kat in itself already mainstream and also has a cult following in Japan. You’ll be surprised to see that it is much more popular than Snickers (M&M, Mars candy bar – caramel, peanuts, nougat, covered in milk chocolate) is in the USA. I love Snickers too and was wondering why it isn’t as popular in Japan as it is in the USA…maybe it might be too rich or too sweet for the Japanese taste buds.
I have seen Sakura Blossom Kit Kat in stores as well. Japanese school girls love it cause of the packaging is well designed which brings back the feeling of Hanami (Cherry blossom viewing during the spring time in Japan – Mid-March to Mid-April).. You’ve got to try it because it’s seasonal. Didn’t get a chance to try it though (I regret it now cause the season has passed).
Other than coming to Japan the only other way that I know of that you can pick this up is through J-List
They now sell this in a retail version in the convenience stores all over Japan for 150 yen.
Just did a search on ebay and look how many different kinds of Kit Kat there are available in Japan!!! Crazy (and there may be more than what is listed below)! All the US really had was Milk Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, Caramel and White Chocolate Kit Kat!!! With new versions of Kit Kat releasing seasonally Kit Kat won’t ever get old in Japan!

I have been frequenting the convenience stores in Japan trying to find other variations of Kit Kat with no luck. I picked up the retail Green Tea Kit Kat at “Daily” convenience store and now they no longer carry it. The only varieties I have seen here are White Chocolate, Milk Chocolate and Kit Kat mini sticks. However, you can find all the rare variations on ebay though.
See Japan’s Nestle Kit Kat site here.
